"The Fractured:Elena" is the first of two spinoff novellas set in a fractured Britain where the Genetic Enhancement Ministry(GEM) has taken control and parents can buy genetically superior babies while those unwilling to be improved are labelled Blemished and shunned from society.In this story Elena Darcey, the clone who befriended and freed a celebrated Blemished criminal fears reprisal from her teacher the terrifying Margaret Murgatroyd. In an effort to escape Area 14 Elena enters a beauty contest and is confronted once again by her rival Clarissa. What she doesn`t expect to find in the pageant is a cut-throat business that supports sabotage and violence, as well as an unexpected reconciliation. What she doesn`t expect after her win and a trip to London is to be kidnapped and to fall in love with the devastatingly handsome Jake Bloom.
This is a slight deviation from the Blemished series, and takes closer look at a minor character, Elena who tries to find her identity, and a purpose in a world that considers her a brainless commodity to be sold in marriage to the highest bidder. Feeling a growing animosity to her cold-hearted parents and a culture that values perfection above moral integrity Elena struggles with her growing sympathy for the Blemished and an unwanted affection for the enigmatic Jake Bloom. Like all of Sarah Dalton's novels I enjoyed this novella and recommend it

Great E-novella to the series. Go Darcy!
I really liked the beginning of the book. Wasn't much into the pageant part, but it worked okay. I was very disappointed however that 2/3 of the way through the book everything changed pace and all of the sudden it was over. I felt like the author was tired of writing and wanted the book to end, so tie up the ends really quick and be done. The relationship wasn't developed between the two characters. Once page she hates him and in love on the next. Was very disappointed.
A nice spinoff to see where Elena ends up before Unleashed begins. Since this novella was short, the first 9 chapters seem a bit wasted - focused on & dragged us through pageant proceedings which don't vary much from present day. Plus we all know who's going to win it... However the plot really picked up and got interesting in the last 4 chapters, but sadly felt rushed though & over too quickly. One event really felt unfair but I guess it was for plot purposes and motivation. I liked Elena's new role. I'm sure it'll be featured in concluding novel of the trilogy.
I am glad Dalton chose to explore Elena's character more. I wanted to know what happened to her after The Blemished, and I received more insight into her character.
Dalton did a good job of expanding Elena's character. It is interesting to see Elena live for the GEM society and sympathize with the Blemished. Her encounter with Mina changed her to see that all people are people. One "race" or "species" is not superior.
I disliked that there were a few cheesy and predictable parts. I like that Elena's confrontation with tragedy will make her stronger. Elena's final choice will change the future for everyone.
I cannot wait to see what role she plays in The Unleashed!
This was a fun bunny trail into the life of Elena, the girl who had bullied Mina in The Blemished and as a result had come to view the Blemished with a new set of eyes. Elena realized that the world as she knew it was wrong. In her attempt to escape Area 14 after Mina's escape, Elena comes to terms with who she is and where her position in life must be.
While the Pageant portion of this novelette isn't that exciting, the story is more interesting once that section has passed. I'm excited to see if we shall see more of Elena in The Unleashed.
Sarah Dalton has written a big twist on the beauty pageant mentality. The girl we are usually led to hate comes across as much more, with courage and conviction to make any mother proud. Too bad Elena's mother is so wrapped up in her own rounds of maintaining the beauty that nature had nothing to do with.
This is a story of cloning taken to an ugly conclusion. Pairing genetic material to produce perfectly beautiful children failed to produce people with intelligence and heart. Elena breaks the mold of self-absorbed beauty queen. She's guilt-ridden for the years she spent bullying the Blemished (natural born people) who are relegated to lives of squalor and servitude to the ruling clone class.
This is book #1 in a series. I'll keep an eye peeled for more from Ms. Dalton.
Ooooooh my dear sweet waffles!
The second I found out about this book, I was like WANT! Ever since the first book of the Blemished trilogy was released last year, I was all over it. I absolutely love this series with a passion, and when I found out there were novellas, I went as crazy as a caffeine addict with an energy drink. Like holy crap! I didn't have to wait freaking five months to read the next book! Wooooo baby!
I finished this book within hours of starting it. The plot of this novella follows one of the secondary characters, a GEM named Elena who used to be a bully. Her heart was changed by none other than the main character of the series, Mina Hart, and now Elena wants out. She wants to get away from Area 14 and escape to London, and the way she does that is through entering a beauty pageant.
Might I just say that Jake was the most amazing character ever. From the first moment of meeting him, I knew I would grow to like him. And damn it, I fell hard! *swoon* Such a shame how things turned out though ( I cried...I honest to cheesecake cried.
Loved everything about this! It was so interesting to see what Elena was up to in the months after Mina, Daniel, Angela, and Sebastian escaped to the Clans. And now Elena's got a plan, so I'm super excited to see how all of this turns out!
And I just realized that now I have to wait....for the final book of the trilogy...well, crap.
